Butter Beauty Contests
Blog Entry: Thursday 26 Aug 2010
While it may sound a little surreal, this coveted title has been around for over 50 years and attracts national media coverage in the United States every year.
Princess Kay of the Milky Way is a title awarded each year during the Minnesota State Fair. Organised by the Midwest Dairy Association, this contest searches the state for a young woman to act as the official good-will ambassador for the Minnesota dairy industry for the duration of her reign.
The contestants are chosen regionally from women whose family are somehow involved in the production of dairy products and who have already shown their commitment to promoting dairy – especially butter! They are also required to have completed high school, be unmarried, without children and have a good knowledge of the dairy industry.
This year saw 19 year-old Kathleen Miron take the crown. She is already studying agricultural education and will now receive a scholarship to continue her education.
