From butter books to milk bottles, here are a few of our favourite dates in dairy history – just for fun!
8000-6000BC: The first cows were thought to have been domesticated.
2000BC: The first references to butter are thought to be written.
1796: Edward Jenner recognises that milkmaids are immune to the deadly smallpox virus. He creates a life-saving vaccine from the cowpox virus.
1822-1895: Louis Pasteur perfects the act of pasterurising milk to ensure it’s safe consumption. This process involved rapidly heating and then cooling liquids to kill any harmful organisms.
1884: Dr Henry Thatcher patents the first glass milk bottle after watching a milkman making deliveries from an open bucket even after a child’s filthy rag doll had accidentally fallen in the milk.
2007: To capitalise on Japan’s huge milk surplus, Hokkaido liquor store owner Chitoshi Nakahara decides to see if he could ferment this excess milk into beer. It worked and you can now find “Bilk” in Japanese liquor stores.
