A nifty kitchen gadget from the past. Photo from Channel4.com.
We all love our butter, but most of us don't keep it under lock and key... any more anyway!
Back in the days before electronic safes and lockable fridges, people had to be a little more inventive with their favourite dairy product – butter. Butter safes were a popular household item and looked like a mini wooden chest complete with a metal inner drawer.
But before we get overwhelmed by images of stealthy butter thieves creeping around in the middle of the night, strangely enough these boxes weren’t even used to keep butter safe.
They were actually used as an early refrigeration device to try and keep butter cold. Not surprisingly, these weren’t terribly effective and were later replaced by a nifty little device that we now call a fridge.
