Holy Cow!

Things are looking up for cows - recent studies have shown that with a little pampering a cow will produce significantly more milk, creamier butter and be a generally bouncier bovine.

And farmers appear to be taking this new research seriously. Some cows now have a personal masseuse on hand in the form of a swinging brush. Gently rotating along the cow’s back, the brush helps to promote blood flow, keep cow coats sparkly clean and is just downright indulgent.

Cows in chilly Northern Ireland spend a significant amount of time inside, lying on cement floors. To make them more comfy, many farmers have started supplying each cow with a mattress. Similar to bean bags, these mattresses prevent the cows from hurting themselves when they lie down and ensure they stay warm and cosy all day long.

Other farmers play music for all their cows to help them relax, although no particular band has emerged as a clear cow favourite just yet.

But a farmer in Hawaii in the United States has taken these creature comforts one step further and installed waterbeds for each and every one of his cows. This extreme comfort has apparently upped each cow’s milk production by at least 10%.
