Meat Free Monday
Blog Entry: Monday 15 Jun 2009
Meat Free Monday aims to persuade people to go veggie once a week to reduce greenhouse gas emissions from the world’s livestock, among the most serious contributors to global warming.
‘I think many of us feel helpless in the face of environmental challenges,’ says Sir Paul. ‘Having one designated meat-free day a week is actually a meaningful change that everyone can make.’
Supporters of Meat Free Monday include Coldplay frontman Chris Martin, Hollywood actors Kevin Spacey and Woody Harrelson, British actress Joanna Lumley, entrepreneur Sir Richard Branson, and comedians Ricky Gervais, David Walliams and Matt Lucas.
In support of the campaign, top chefs are adding a special meat-free menu beside their usual ones on Mondays, and both celebrities, the general public and the McCartney’s themselves are submitting recipes to the Meat Free Monday website.
Don’t worry if you’re not a vegetarian as there are plenty of tasty meat-free meals you can make and we particularly love those which use real butter! Independent features a selection of special recipes to launch today’s very first Meat Free Monday. From Bryn Williams, Chef Patron at iconic London restaurant, Odette’s, rich and buttery Pea Soup with Poached Hen Egg to TV chef Simon Rimmer’s Peppered Mushroom and Stilton Pie with real butter pastry, which he wisely advises to serve with green beans and buttery mash.
Meat Free Monday begins today and it’s clear that with deliciously buttery and veggie recipes like these, it’s easy to help tackle climate change.
