Simply the Best
The Best of British: The Jam Sandwich
You just can't beat the old favourites and often the simplest ingredients give the greatest pleasure. Let's hear it for the Jam Sandwich.

Fresh bread with real butter and good quality strawberry jam is undeniably lovely and the high street sandwich king Marks & Spencer will be adding it to their ‘Simply’ range in stores everywhere tomorrow in order to provide the ‘perfect quick fix, credit crunch lunch’.

And M&S would be quite right to make their trademark claim ‘it’s not just food’, as a jam sandwich brings not just nourishment but masses of nostalgia with every bite.

They claim that the jam sandwich is ‘one of the greatest simple pleasures of life’ that will delight harried and nostalgic office workers. M&S Sandwich specialist (amazing job title!) Katy Patino said: ‘We are delighted to be launching this national favourite. It really is the ultimate comfort food. For those who haven’t eaten one for years, one bite takes you straight back to your childhood.’

Times columnist Giles Smith agrees it’s the ‘undisputed king among sandwiches, with a long and gilded history behind it’, but he adds that paying 75p for M&S to make it takes some of the pleasure away. He asks: ‘What kind of people will we become if we turn our backs on the simple pleasures available from domestic accomplishments, such as playing the piano or (in this case) making our own strawberry jam sandwiches?’
