What's in Your Buttery?
Blog Entry: Thursday 19 Aug 2010
A modern take on the traditional buttery.
But before we ask what's in it, perhaps we should clarify what exactly a buttery is!
A buttery is actually the old word for a pantry. The buttery was a small, unheated room, usually located in the cool north corner of a home and was used to store barrels of flour, sugar and other staples. While you might guess that it was named after the butter that was stored there, this isn’t the case – the name was actually derived from the butts of barrels that were stored there.
The buttery was also often used as the place to churn butter, make cheese or even bake bread. While we may now keep 5lb bags of flour as opposed to a barrel and buy our butter at the supermarket, many of us still have a buttery – we simply call it a pantry.
